Next Steps: Gym Reconstruction
[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Across from the newly renovated Welker Smucker Culinary Arts Center stands a building trapped in the past. Built in the 1960’s, the Boys’ Village gymnasium is showing its age. The exterior has cracks in the masonry walls and a leaky roof. On rainy days, the boys weave in and out of buckets as they attempt to play basketball with their peers. The air conditioner is not dependable and the well-worn exercise machines are mostly idle.
Over the years, The Village Network has made major renovations to every other part of the school building, leaving the gym for last. At it’s current state, the more than 50-year-old gym has reached the end of its useful life and needs to be demolished and reconstructed.
The Boys’ Village gym reconstruction project is estimated to cost $600,000 and will provide our youth with an adequate facility to exercise and play. The gym is essential to campus because it’s a place where youth can expend energy in the winter months and learn team-building skills.
The Village Network will be able to break ground for the new gym when half of the total cost is funded. We are currently at $228,000, and need just $72,000 more to break ground. Any donation amount is appreciated and will bring us one step closer to creating a perfect place for our youth to play.
