An Eye on the Community

A hallmark throughout the 75-year history of The Village Network has been the ability and willingness to develop programs and services to respond to the changing needs of our clients and referral sources.  Increasingly, The Village Network has placed emphasis on the development of partnerships that enable us to meet local and emerging needs in the communities.

Residential Program Locations

The Village Network currently operates four Ohio-based residential programs that are in Wooster, Salem, Bethesda, and Mount Vernon.  Each location provides short-term residential treatment, emergency placements, mental health evaluations, and transitional living programs. Each program has a strong focus on the treatment of complex trauma among children and adolescents and integrates the core principles of neurodevelopment and traumatology to aid in the selection and sequencing of therapeutic, educational, and enrichment activities that match the needs and strengths of the individual. The theoretical foundation for all The Village Network’s residential services is based on proven strategies of the Neurosequential Model of Therapeutics (NMT) and Collaborative Problem Solving (CPS). Both evidenced-based approaches are trauma-sensitive and are designed to address the complex needs of the youth and have been proven to be effective with a wide variety of presenting problems.  Our programs consist of a strong skills training approach where the youth are taught and modeled prosocial skills and behaviors by the program staff and then given the opportunity to practice the new skill within the therapy group and in the daily living unit.

Our Philosophy

The Village Network provides a safe place for children and their families to develop healthy relationships. Our goal is to help children develop the capacity to self-regulate. There are four components to this philosophy:

1. Our goal is regulation rather than compliance. While we still have expectations of compliance, we put an emphasis on providing routines and structure. Structure serves as a regulatory intervention for the consumers of our services. With the NMT Brain Metric, expert staff members determine a child’s level of regulation (i.e., their present place on the arousal continuum). 
2. We provide developmentally appropriate care. It is important to have clear understanding of the developmental level of each child. TVN provides developmentally appropriate care by assuring each child receives relevant positive developmental, educational and therapeutic services.
3. We provide an atmosphere in which children feel safe to develop positive relationships. We understand that many of the children who come to us have had difficulty feeling safe. It takes time and understanding for children to trust relationships to be safe. They must be given the space to explore those relationships. At the Village Network, safe relationships are both an intervention and an outcome. 
4. We believe that a child’s family is essential to treatment. We believe parents are the experts in the care of their own children. In those cases when a parent is not readily available, extended family members and even former foster parents become an integral part of the child’s treatment team.
